WORKSHOPS/Classes

NB: Lindy Hop and Blues classes are taught in pairs, with a LEADER and a FOLLOWER. See partners section for more information.

Lindy Hop

Lindy Hop is a social swing dance created by African American communities in Harlem, New York, during the late 1920s and 1930s. Born on the dance floors of legendary ballrooms such as the Savoy, it developed alongside the vibrant swing music of the Big Bands.

Rooted in earlier African American dances like the Charleston, Lindy Hop is joyful, rhythmic, and deeply connected to the music. It encourages playfulness, improvisation, and communication between partners, making every dance unique. Today, Lindy Hop is danced all over the world as a celebration of community, creativity, and shared energy.

Blues/Slow Drag

Blues dancing comes from the African American social dance traditions connected to Blues music in the early 20th century, particularly in juke joints and community gatherings. It emphasizes connection, grounded movement, musical interpretation, and emotional expression.

Slow Bal (Slow Balboa) blends elements of Blues feeling with Balboa technique, offering smooth, subtle, and deeply connected dancing at slower tempos. Together, Blues and Slow Bal invite dancers to explore nuance, presence, and musicality in an intimate and expressive way — always grounded in social dance values.

Balboa

Balboa is a swing dance that emerged in Southern California in the 1920s and 1930s, developed by dancers responding to crowded dance floors and fast swing music. While influenced by African American swing culture, Balboa evolved with its own unique aesthetic and technique.

Characterised by efficient footwork, upright posture, and precise rhythm, Balboa is danced both in close embrace (Pure Bal) and open position (Bal-Swing). It is playful, elegant, and highly musical — perfect for fast tempos and refined partner connection.

Jazz Roots

Jazz Roots refers to solo dances created by African American dancers alongside jazz music in the early 20th century. These dances — such as Charleston, Suzy Q, and Tackie Annie — form the foundation of many swing and jazz dances today.

In these classes, dancers explore rhythm, movement, musicality, and self-expression through solo movement. Jazz Roots is not only joyful and empowering on its own, but also enriches Lindy Hop, Blues, and Balboa by deepening body awareness and musical understanding.
No partner is required.
