NB: Lindy Hop and Blues classes are taught in pairs, with a LEADER and a FOLLOWER. See partners section for more information.
Lindy Hop is the original Swing dance from the 1930s. Born on the dance floors of Harlem’s ballrooms in New York City, it was inspired by the rich Swing music of the Big Bands. Lindy Hop has its roots in earlier dances like the Charleston from the 1920s. This energetic and playful dance has stood the test of time and is now danced all over the world. It closely follows the music, allowing for plenty of playfulness and improvisation.
Blues/Slow Drag dancing is a soulful and expressive dance style rooted in the rich history of African American music and culture. Originating from the juke joints and dance halls of the early 20th century, Blues dancing emphasizes close connection, improvisation, and deep musicality. With its smooth, fluid movements and focus on feeling the music, Blues offers a unique and intimate dance experience. Slow Drag, a substyle of Blues, features relaxed, grounded movements that allow dancers to express the emotions and subtleties of slow blues tunes. Whether you’re new to Blues or a seasoned dancer, this style invites you to connect deeply with your partner and the music, creating moments of shared joy and expression.
In these classes, you will learn and/or review the basic steps of jazz roots – Charleston, Suzy Q, Tackie Annie – to build fun choreographies and learn how to improvise to enhance your musicality. In addition to developing body and music awareness, solo Charleston, also known as “jazz roots,” is an excellent way to learn variations that you can incorporate into your Lindy Hop and Blues dancing.
Prerequisites: You meet the criteria for Lindy Hop or Blues. No prior knowledge of jazz roots is necessary to participate. No partner needed.
Fantastic opportunities to make the most of our international instructors’ presence and discover your new talents. These classes are the perfect complement to your overall dance skills, helping you become a more versatile and well-rounded dancer.
